Held in Danang for the first time, the 2015 IBM Bluemix Hackathon is a technical competition for Danang IT university students. The event was organized by the Danang Information and Communications Department and IBM Vietnam. Twenty-one students with the seven best apps competed in the final round on June 21st at the Danang Software Park. DTU teams came in first and third and entered the National Finals to be held in Ho Chi Minh City in July.

The Danang Information and Communications Department Director, Mr. Pham Kim Son said that the Hackathon concept was developed to improve the level of IT expertise in Danang and the production of useful applications. This is in keeping with the overall strategy of opening up new relationships between universities and business, and to provide the ideal environment for creative IT enthusiasts. In doing so, IT companies will encourage university students to perfect their applications for wide, future distribution.
Launched in April 15th, the 2015 IBM Hackathon drew many participants from the local community. In the first round, teams submitted descriptions of their projects for evaluation. Selected teams were then given access to register, develop and deploy their apps on the IBM Bluemix system and then present them to the judges.
Third Prize is awarded to the Lucess team
Tran Anh Khoa, Nguyen Minh Tuan and Nguyen Van Hai of DTU HKT team impressed the judges and won First Prize with their project entitled Nutrilife, Nutrition For Life. This application was designed to help users research essential foods, calculate the amount needed for extra calories, identify clean food and provide all relevant information on diets. Doan Hai Dang, Le Ba Dat and Nguyen Ba Chinh of the DTU Lucess team took third place with their DNGuider, a useful application for tourists to search for information on destinations, directions, hotels, resorts and so on. These students are all studying in the Advanced IT program in conjunction with Carnegie Mellon University.
Tran Anh Khoa of the HKT team, said: “Good nutrition is one of the top issues in Vietnam today and we hope that Nutrilife app will help to improve living standards. In this competition, I have been able to share experiences with students from other universities, strengthen my programming techniques in Cloud Computing and improve my teamwork and presentation skills. This will encourage me to work harder in the pursuit of my technological aspirations.”
With such strong results, the DTU students have demonstrated their ability, passion and contribution to the improvement of the quality of education and the reputation of their university.
