DTU Students Come Second in the 2018 VNPT Secathon Competition

DTU students continue to win big prizes in Information Security competitions. The 2nd annual finals of the VNPT Secathon competition took place at the Hanoi Post and Telecommunications Institute of Technology on May 17th, and DTU proved its competency by coming 2nd out of 40 teams.

The Vietnam Post and Telecommunications (VNPT) group collaborated with the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Vietnam Computer Emergency Response Team (VNCERT), the Vietnam Information Security Association and the Hanoi Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology to hold the 2018 VNPT Secathon, to promote Information Security skills, and 40 teams from 12 universities nationwide participated. Each team consisted of 3 members, who competed under the Capture the Flag format, in the four   areas of Pwnable (exploiting software vulnerabilities); Web Exploitation; Reverse Engineering; and Forensics.

After 6 hours of non-stop competition, the ISITDTU team of Huynh Van Quoc Binh, Nguyen Oanh Thuong and Nguyen Nhat Hoang finished second with 3,164 points, just 100 points less than the Military Technical Academy and 1,000 points lower from the other co-winner, the University of Engineering and Technology. Three third prizes were awarded to the FPT University with 2,152 points, the Post and Telecommunications Institute of Technology with 2,120 and the HCMC University of Technology with 2,120. 

Huynh Van Quoc Binh, of the K21CMUTMT class, said: “Thanks to our specialized programming training at DTU, we solved the problems quickly. The DTU lecturers in the Network Security Lab supported us in our practice sessions, we met the challenges head-on, resulting in fewer mistakes and were able to demonstrate our talents in exploiting software vulnerabilities.”

The best performers in the competition will be offered jobs at VNPT group and join the Microsoft training courses.
