The GLEC English Speech and Essay writing competition was held by the non-profit “Hope for the Future” organization. Facing seemingly unresolvable problems, ranging from environmental issues to refugee crises, GLEC aims to raise awareness and understanding of contemporary global issues.

This year, hundreds of participants from Vietnam, the USA, Korea, Japan, India, Indonesia, Taiwan, the Philippines, Thailand and elsewhere participated and were divided into the four groups of primary, secondary, high school and university students. Each group was given a selected SDG topic and contestants were asked to analyze a specific global issue, elaborate on the current situation, propose personalized solutions and present their conclusions.

Frances Summer Dale V. Dy was already greatly concerned about social issues and was therefore highly motivated to compete in the GLEC contest to express her opinions.

This year, the contest was conducted online because of the pandemic. Participants had to compose a completely original speech and submit a voice recording. Summer’s topic was about the post-pandemic recovery.

Summer said: "In my speech, I talked about how recovering from the aftereffects of the Covid-19 pandemic involved overhauling our energy policies. Climate conservation should be the foundation of all new economic policies and there are massive opportunities for development and investment. If so, improvements in our health and wellbeing will follow. I read a lot in preparation for my speech as reading is the key to knowledge. In addition, I watched documentaries and other content related to my topic and then presented my results fluently and confidently. Winning the Grand Prize meant a lot to me and confirmed that I was able to transmit my message clearly and influence my viewers at the same time."

Ninety-three prizes were awarded to the best contestants, attending the following universities:

- Grand Prize - Duy Tan University in Viet Nam
- Excellence Awards - Seoul National University in South Korea and Thang Long University in Vietnam
- Outstanding Awards - Seoul National University in South Korea and Thang Long University in Vietnam
