The DTU Provost Inspires Students: Why you are attending university?

“Learning is a life-long journey, we can learn anywhere, any way, any time. University is certainly not the last school you will attend”, said Dr. Le Nguyen Bao to an audience of lecturers and students at an exchange seminar entitled “How to Succeed at University”.

Dr. Le Nguyen Bao shared his experiences to help students identify their personal objectives and find ways of achieving them.

Dr. Le Nguyen Bao is a Valedictorian of the Faculty of Business Administration of the State University of New York and received a Master’s degree in Information Systems from Carnegie Mellon University.

Opening the seminar, Dr. Le Nguyen Bao asked: “Do you think that you will continue studying for a post-graduate degree? Some of you may continue to study for a Master’s degree or a Doctorate. However, learning never ends. On graduation, you will all continue studying at your university, workplace or elsewhere. Studying is a long journey and we can learn everywhere.”

Dr. Le Nguyen Bao stressed the differences between studying at university and at high school. He added: “Over time, the credit-based study system has been implemented and, due to the large volume of necessary and vital new information, you should do more research independently, but still work with your lecturers and mentors on specific study issues. You must establish your own personal goals, be motivated and more self-disciplined.”

Dr. Le Nguyen Bao also encouraged students to take part in community activities. He explained time-management methods to motivate them, like creating their own study plans.

“Why you are attending university”?

It is very important for students to know why they are attending university, so that they will set up suitable study and career plans.

Dr. Le Nguyen Bao advised: “You should know why you are attending university. Are you studying for the sake of yourself or your family? Why did you choose your major? Each of you should balance your studying, eating, sleeping and recreational requirements in setting your own personal long-term plans. Then you will develop the ambition to achieve something in your lives, providing that these are good things, like earning high grades or participating in meaningful community activities. This will help you decide whether or not you will work for a company on graduation or start your own business”

The DTU Provost also advised students to choose the correct career path and develop innovative startup ideas for their future. They will then be qualified to follow in the footsteps of other DTU alumni who have won valuable awards in national and international competitions and successfully raised millions of dollars of capital from entrepreneurs investing in their startups.

“What I want most from you is your effort, dedication and daring to think and to do. Do not fear failure, because failure gives us the opportunity to hit the restart button and consider other brand new possibilities. Failures teach us how to succeed.” Dr. Le Nguyen Bao added.
