DTU International Symposium on Knowledge Science in the Age of Big Data

On November 29 and 30, an international symposium entitled “Knowledge Science in the Age of Big Data” was organized by DTU. Attendees included experts from several different countries, such as Switzerland, Japan, and China, to meet and share their achievements and research in big data topics.
 
“In the 4.0 Industrial Revolution, big data is a vital element and the key to success in business, finance and banking, education, hospitality, healthcare and social networking,” said DTU Vice-Provost and Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Minh. “Practice shows that the use of big data is now increasing rapidly in many fields with many different objectives. I hope that the participants at this symposium will provide us with an additional understanding and useful ideas related to their knowledge data management issues, to lead us to coming up with some everyday practical solutions.”

The term “big data” is used to denote huge databases harvested from many different sources, which, when managed effectively, could be of tremendous help in research and in many other aspects of our lives. This symposium was a valuable opportunity for scientists to share their latest research results, have interdisciplinary discussions of common interest and discover new future partnership opportunities.

At the symposium, highly practical issues, presented from multiple perspectives attracted interest, such as big data and knowledge technology, knowledge management, online media processing, data quality management, data analysis techniques and complex system modeling and analysis. Most of the presentations confirmed the importance and major impact of big data on almost all fields.
 
Big data improves and optimizes the decision-making process, allowing researchers to address and solve complex problems that were previously either impossible or prohibitively difficult to tackle.
 
Attendees exchanged their experiences creating databases, their impressions of the impact of big data, artificial intelligence, and the challenges and opportunities big data brings to the 4.0 Industrial Revolution.
