Mai Tran Gia Bao: From English-Specialized Class to US Scholarship
Soft-spoken, approachable, but at times taciturn, Mai Tran Gia Bao, a student from an English-specialized class, is liked right away by everyone he meets. Interviewing him revealed many surprises and the youthful excitement of a student who had just scored an impressive 26.13/30 in the 2025 HSGE in the A01 subject group, with 7.75 for mathematics, 9.00 for physics, and 9.25 for English.

Gia Bao’s wonderful HSGE results will provide
a solid foundation for new breakthroughs at university
This impressive achievement marks the beginning of a new chapter for Gia Bao at DTU, where he has been awarded a full scholarship to the On-Site Study-Abroad American Degree Program in partnership with Troy University (US), major in Computer Science.
From a young age, Gia Bao was exposed to English through the passionate teaching of his mother, an English teacher. More than just his first teacher, she kindled a natural love for the language in him. This provided him with an early and strong foundation in English, gave him confidence when enrolling in an English-specialized class, and now allows him to use English as his primary tool to explore the world of technology.
Gia Bao’s English skills obtained him several academic awards:
- second prize in English at the provincial Skilled Student contest in 2023–2024,
- third prize in English at the provincial Skilled Student contest in 2024–2025.
Notably, Gia Bao achieved an IELTS score of 7.5 even before graduating from high school, thanks to a long-term, consistent study plan. “There’s so many great technology resources - especially about programming, AI, data science, and the like - that are almost all in English,” he explains. “If you don’t understand them, you’ll fall behind your peers in other countries. Listening to lectures and reading materials in English gave me the right approach from the start, and gave me a correct understanding of all the jargon, allowing me to apply it easily. For me, the English language is like a map that helps you go faster and stay on the right track in the journey of learning new technologies.”
Gia Bao also proudly explains how his passion for technology was nurtured in his family, with a lot of influence of his father, who works at DTU: “My dad works in IT at DTU. He occasionally explains about research projects in network engineering and about emerging technologies, which really excites me and makes me want to learn more. After consulting various sources, I found out that DTU is a leading university in IT, so I decided to study here. In the future, I want to become an IT expert, not only skilled in programming but also creative and capable of solving real-world problems, to contribute to the development of our country.”
