Vietnamese Scientists Honored Internationally in 2024

In 2024, Vietnamese scientists across various fields received prestigious international awards and were recognized in global rankings for their outstanding achievements.

First Vietnamese scientist to win an international Astronomy Award in Taiwan

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Chi Thiem, 45, became the first Vietnamese recipient of the NCU-DELTA Young Astronomer Lectureship Award, presented by Taiwan’s National Central University and Delta Electronics Group. This award honors young astronomers under 45 for significant contributions.

Dr. Thiem works at the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute and the Korea University of Science and Technology. Over nearly 20 years of research, he and his colleagues have achieved remarkable results in the study of cosmic dust and magnetic fields. His team developed a unified quantitative theory describing the alignment of dust particles in magnetic fields, solving a problem that had persisted in astrophysics for over 70 years.

According to the award committee, Dr. Thiem has a strong academic foundation and extensive research experience in cosmic dust, star formation, and planetary evolution. His model for light polarization caused by cosmic dust is used in advanced telescopes like ALMA, Planck, and SOFIA.

Beyond his research, Dr. Thiem actively participates in academic activities in Vietnam. He co-founded the Space and Astrophysics Group in Vietnam (SAGI) to promote astrophysics in the country.

First Vietnamese scientist honored with the TechWomen 100 Award

Dr. Nguyen Thuy Ba Linh, 44, from University College London (UCL), became the first Vietnamese to be recognized with the TechWomen100 Award in 2024. This UK-based award celebrates outstanding women in technology who have a significant community impact.

An expert in biomaterials and tissue regeneration, Dr. Linh’s groundbreaking research includes large-scale polycaprolactone technology for stem cell harvesting, which has been patented and commercialized. She also founded SmileScaff, a company applying advanced biomaterials in medicine to accelerate wound healing and tissue regeneration.

Dr. Linh has published over 50 scientific papers, authored two book chapters, and holds two patents. She serves as an editor and reviewer for international journals like the Journal of Biomaterials Applications. As the president of the Vietnam Young Academy, she mentors young scientists and advocates for women in STEM.
