Partnership: Resilient solidarity in defense of maritime sovereignty

“The primary political mission of Brigade 146 is to train and remain combat-ready to protect the 21 islands of Vietnam’s Spratlys,” Brigade 146 Deputy Political Commissar Col. Do Hai Dang said at the partnership ceremony. “For today’s partnership, I extend my sincere gratitude to DTU and particularly to Meritorious Teacher and Hero of Labor Le Cong Co, DTU Chairman, for his care and for giving us, officers and soldiers, much affection and encouragement to steadfastly overcome all challenges to outstandingly fulfill our mission of protecting the sacred maritime sovereignty of the Fatherland. Establishing this military–civilian partnership today is highly meaningful, strengthens mutual understanding, and lays a foundation for us to harness our collective strength and fulfill our responsibilities and duties well.”

Brigade 146 and DTU have pledged to promote traditional education focused on patriotism, awareness of national sovereignty, and gratitude for the generations of soldiers manning the vanguard. Knowledge of the glorious history of the Vietnam People’s Army, of the Naval Service, and especially of the heroic Truong Sa Brigade will be widely shared among officers, soldiers, students, and lecturers of both Brigade and university.

Brigade 146 and DTU will increase their sense of responsibility in the face of hostile schemes and ruses, remain determined to foster military–civilian solidarity for the defense of national sovereignty, and teach younger generations a sense of duty regarding maritime sovereignty. Brigade and university will furthermore regularly exchange information and organize exchanges to enhance mutual understanding and support with respective missions. Together, they will combat ideological and moral decline, prevent social ills, and care for policy-benefiting families and disadvantaged students.

Practical activities for continued affection for maritime regions

For many years, lecturers and students of DTU have been organizing various practical activities for the nation’s maritime regions. The university has donated over 200 million VND to support officers and soldiers stationed in the Spratly Islands district and organized text-message campaigns in support of fishermen in Paracels and Spratlys. At the opening ceremony for the 2018–2019 academic year, the university was honored with a gift of a national flag from the soldiers on Pearson Reef in the Spratly Islands - a sacred gift testifying to strong military - civilian ties and a reminder to younger generations of their responsibility to uphold sovereignty.

In continuation of this tradition, DTU organized a visit and exchange with officers and soldiers of Brigade 146 and representatives of the Truong Sa district People’s Committee on December 11, 2022. During this visit, the university presented Lunar New Year gifts with a total value of about 126 million VND to 33 military outposts there. Most recently, in commemoration of the 79th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People’s Army on December 22, 1944, and the 2024 Lunar New Year, DTU once more visited the 4th Regional Command and presented gifts for the islands of Truong Sa district for a total of over 163 million VND.

For sacred maritime sovereignty

“I’m a veteran of the Ho Chi Minh Trail and I went through years of hardship and large sacrifices on the battlefield,” Meritorious Teacher and Hero of Labor Le Cong Co, DTU Chairman, said full of emotion. “I therefore deeply understand and feel for the adversities and challenges faced daily by the soldiers defending the Spratlys, contending with harsh conditions and enemy pressure while suffering all kinds of deprivation. The partnership with Brigade 146 under Naval Region 4 established today is therefore profoundly meaningful and marks the beginning of a special relationship between brigade and university.

“In DTU’s mission, we clearly emphasized nurturing patriotism, as many generations have made sacrifices for our independence and freedom today. I always remind our staff, lecturers, and students to be grateful to those who came before us, and through this partnership ceremony, I hope the bond between DTU and Brigade 146 will endure forever. Together, we will build strong military–civilian relations, promote education, and increase our mutual support to protect the integrity of our maritime sovereignty.”

This partnership between DTU and Brigade 146 exemplifies the spirit of military–civilian solidarity and connects the younger generation with their mission of defending the maritime regions of the Fatherland. This will be a solid foundation for the flame of patriotism and defense of the Fatherland to burn bright in the hearts of all Vietnamese citizens.
