Bilateral relations between Vietnam and South Korea have been developing strongly, with shared economic and cultural partnerships. The need to recruit people fluent in Korean in fields like tourism, economics, entertainment and education is ever-increasing, and it is now an ideal time to explore future career opportunities and learn about the country, the “land of kimchi”: its culture, the people and their language.
Dr. Le Thi Ngoc Cam, Dean of the Korean Language Faculty
To help candidates learn more about the Korean Language major (or Korean Language) at DTU, the Dean of the Korean Language Faculty, Dr. Le Thi Ngoc Cam, talks about the training programs, scholarship policies, internship and career opportunities in this sector.
Reporter: Can you give us some information related to the demand for human resources who speak Korean in Central Vietnam in particular and in Vietnam in general?
Dr. Ngoc Cam: As we know, Vietnam and Korea established diplomatic relations in 1992. The two countries became strategic partners in 2009. According to the Korean Immigration Bureau, there were over 150,000 Koreans living in Vietnam and about 190,000 Vietnamese people living and working in Korea at the end of March 2019. In addition, according to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, there were another 4.3 million South Korean visitors and tourists in 2019 and Danang was their favorite destination worldwide.
Besides Da Nang, many provinces in Central Vietnam such as Quang Nam and Quang Ngai also held many economic and cultural exchange activities with Korea. In particular, investments by large enterprises in these provinces are increasing with increasing investment capital, including by:
- Doosan VINA Company in Dung Quat Economic Zone in Quang Ngai province.
- Hyosung, Panko, and OCC Vina in Tam Thang Industrial Park in Quang Nam, and others.
On such a trading platform, it can be seen that studying Korean Language is a "proactive" choice to access good job opportunities and desirable salaries.
Reporter: Is it difficult to learn Korean? What are the advantages of Vietnamese people when studying Korean?
Dr. Ngoc Cam: Young people who intend to study the Korean language should not worry too much about the "difficulty" of this language since Korean is classified into the group of languages that are easy to write and use in the world. Specifically, Korean is composed of 21 vowels and 19 consonants, each of which has a clear pronunciation. Once you know the alphabet, you can read any syllable in the language.

Vietnamese people learning Korean will have more advantages because Vietnam and Korea are both influenced by the Chinese language. In addition, the similarities in traditions, cultures and people between the two countries will also help you feel more familiar when starting to learn this new language.
Reporter: What are the main goals of the Korean language training program?
Dr. Ngoc Cam: The Korean language course lasts from 3.5 to 4 years, and graduates will be able to work in well-paid jobs at foreign businesses. Students obtain a basic knowledge of the Korean language during their first two years, as a foundation for a further in-depth education in their third year, studying topics such as: Tour guide operation; Overview of hospitality; Principles of foreign tour operation; Import-export, Office administration and Human resource management. The Korean language course consists of a total of 135 credits in:
• Korean translation and interpretation: Students are trained to become fluent in Korean; to translate and interpret; to understand the country of South Korea and its culture and society, particularly South Korean economics and business; and receive an overview of office administration, import-export and human resource management. Students can participate in field trips to local Korean businesses and study in South Korea.
• Korean for tourism: Students are trained to become fluent in Korean, to understand the South Korean country, culture and society, particularly tourism and hospitality and outbound tour operation.
Reporter: Can you tell us about the prospects for Korean Language majors in the Central Vietnamese and national labor markets?
Dr. Ngoc Cam: Language skills can be used in almost any career, and particularly in businesses that trade internationally. Therefore, the potential for fully-qualified graduates of Korean Language is huge: working as tour operators, in customer service and as flight attendants at companies like Juju Air Danang and VietTravel, as translators, interpreters, secretaries, public relations assistants and human resource staff at South Korean companies like Doosan, Panko or Samsung or as experts at the Department of Foreign Affairs or the Center for External Services.

In 2020, DTU will award the following scholarships to qualified Korean Language applicants:
- 700 scholarships worth from 500,000 to 2 million VND each, for applicants with high school transcript scores of 22 points or higher.
- 720 DTU scholarships worth 1 to 5 million VND each, for applicants with a total HSGE three-subject score from 3 points higher than the admissions minimum.
