The Finals of the English Debating Contest

The DTU Debating Club held its third contest, in English only, for thirty students, to help them improve their debating skills and language proficiency. In the finals on February 3rd, eight of the best students from the preliminary round debated four key current topics.

Professor Barbara G. Howell from Lorain College in the USA said: “This is the third time that the DTU Debating Club has held the contest to encourage DTU students to confidently display their English listening, speaking, presentation and persuasive skills, vital in international integration. English is vitally important, so we must help students study English diligently, and develop critical and creative minds at the same time.”

In this year’s contest finals, eight students in four debating groups debated four topics. These were: “Can money buy happiness?”, “Technology makes users lonely”, “Animal testing should be banned” and “Beauty contests have negative impacts on women”. Each topic was debated for five minutes, by two students from each group, with one side supporting the argument and the other against, after which contestants had two further minutes to defend their viewpoints and convince the jury.
