On December 24th, twenty leading Danang scientists were honoured for their active involvement in promoting the city’s science and technology sector between 1997 and 2017. The event was organised by the municipal People’s Committee and the city’s Union of Science and Technology Associations, marking twenty years since Danang was recognized as a centrally-governed city, on 1 January 1997.
Dr. Le Nguyen Bao, DTU Vice-Provost, received the Certificate of Merit for his remarkable achievements in reshaping education and research at DTU, the first and largest private university in the Central Region.

Dr. Bao and his colleagues have done many things to improve the quality of education at DTU, by understanding the requirements needed to establish a truly global university. Dr. Bao has directly restructured the entire range of educational programs and expanded partnerships with well-known international universities to transfer international standard curriculum to DTU. The university is collaborating with Carnegie Mellon University, CMU, one of the four leading universities in Information Technology in America, with Pennsylvania State University, PSU, one of five largest public universities in America, with California State University in Fullerton, the largest school in the California State University system, with Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CSU - Cal State, one of the five leading universities in Architecture in the US, with Lorain Country Community College, Purdue University, Appalachian State University, Coventry University in the UK and Upper Iowa University in America. DTU offers Study-Abroad and On-Site Study-Abroad programs which have attracted many new students.
As a leader of the “e-University” project, Dr. Bao oversaw the development of the Training Management Software System to streamline DTU’s student management. He also put into practice ten other software products, including “The Virtual 3D Human Anatomy” application which is part of the “Virtual 3D Body System”, which was one of the three research projects receiving the Tri Thuc Tre Vi Giao Duc Award in 2016.
In 2012, DTU became the second Vietnamese university to participate in the CDIO Initiative, following the National University in HCMC. Dr. Bao has made a significant contribution to the completion and presentation of projects and adopted CDIO as the foundation for planning the curriculum of DTU’s Engineering programs.
Using CDIO, all the DTU academic programs are being upgraded. Dr. Bao has participated in many international CDIO conferences, taken students to annual international CDIO competitions and won many awards. DTU came first and second in the 2013 CDIO Cup, hosted in the USA at Harvard University and MIT.
In the course of building a multi-level, multi-discipline university, which meets the increasing demands of graduate education, Dr. Bao made a proposal for new Doctoral programs and submitted it to the Ministry of Education & Training, MOET, for approval. In 2013, DTU received their permission to offer Doctoral programs in Business Administration and Computer Science and DTU became the first private university in Vietnam to do so.
Meanwhile, Dr. Bao has conducted many research projects and published fifteen papers in national and international journals, seven in ISI journals. In 2016 alone, Dr. Bao has had two international papers published in the Journal of Computational Science and the Review of Scientific Instruments. He has also just completed one Ministerial research project and is working on one other, in addition to one Provincial project.
Dr. Bao and his colleagues have organized ten National and International Scientific Conferences at DTU and edited a book entitled “Integrated Uncertainty in Knowledge Modelling and Decision Making”, published by Springer.
Dr. Bao received a Certificate of Merit from the Chairperson of Danang People’s Committee, a Certificate of Merit from the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations and a Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister, for his great effort and significant contribution to Vietnam’s development and strength. He also received the "Emulation Soldier" title at the grassroots and ministerial levels and was recognized as an outstanding individual in the National Patriotic Emulation Movement in the educational sector between 2010 and 2015. His recognition by the State, MOET and the community and his many awards and titles have given Dr.Bao further encouragement to continue making great contributions to furthering the development of the education, science and technology.
