After eight weeks study and implementation by the HQT team of Duy Tan University, a project entitled “A System for the Retrieval and Collection of Information about the Cold Storage of Tuna” won the 2016 National Targeted Innovation Challenge (TIC). The product met the organizers’ requirements to create a product which could be commercialized, thereby improving the quality of tuna and the sustainable development of the Aquatic industry.
Sponsored by Frontier Law & Advisors, TIC is a competition designed to encourage Vietnamese university students to find creative solutions to selected environmental problems. In the pilot contest, Frontier chose a problem related to tuna fishing by hand. Then, based on an invention already developed by Frontier, contestants were to produce an invention to retrieve and collect data about tuna.
The DTU HQT team receive first prize
The final round, with four teams, took place at the Danang Entrepreneurship Support Company Ltd (DNES) on December 10th. They were the HQT team from Duy Tan University, the Dreamers from the University of Science and Technology in Hanoi, and the Law Breakers and Salt Pepper Breads from the Danang University of Technology and Science. They had 30 minutes to present their product, 20 minutes to market it to investors and 10 minutes to answer questions.

The HQT team of Le Quang Thanh, Le Nhat Hung and Nguyen Ngo Anh Quan won a first prize of $1,000 for their Central Control Set, which guarantees optimum cold storage conditions for the tuna. The second prize of $400 went to the Dreamers.
Le Quang Thanh is a third-year student of the DTU Electrical Engineering faculty. He said: “We developed a process with two parts, storing tuna at low temperature in frozen barrels and retrieving, collecting, processing and retrieving information about the tuna. We used inexpensive materials, such as spongy barrels and helmets. The barrels are brightly painted for easy identification at a distance. We are happy that our product was recognized as highly marketable, which encourages us in our future work.”
Mr. Stanley Boots, CEO of Frontier Law & Advisors, said: “The top teams, including the winning HTQ team from Duy Tan University, discovered innovative solutions to the invention they were given, such as storing tuna in good condition, being able to identify its origin and collecting and posting information about the tuna on the Cloud. All the teams worked diligently to achieve satisfactory results and their efforts have demonstrated the rapid development taking place in Danang and throughout Vietnam.”
The HQT team also participated previously in the Third Science and Technology Forum and in the 2016 Vietnam StartUp Unitour 2. In addition, Le Quang Thanh from the IWRobot team won first prize with his project about a robot that automatically inspects the hulls of ships for weld defects and Le Nhat Hung with SmartGlasses, which won second prize for his project about multipurpose spectacles for the visually impaired.
