The primary focus of AOARD is to fund basic research to advance the frontiers of science. The fund was created to cultivate and build relationships between leading scientists and engineers throughout Asia-Pacific with their university counterparts. AFOSR and AOARD have a long-term view of application development, with an interest in developing collaborative projects between Asia-Pacific scientists and engineers, and AFRL scientists.

AOARD will collaborate with and finance eligible researchers at DTU and sponsor Air Force related workshops and conferences. Dr. Ta Quoc Bao, from the DTU Institute for Research and Development, who received financial support from AOARD in 2015, talked about his project entitled: “Research on Manufacturing a Handheld Medical Diagnostic Device”
