Held from May 17th to 19th in Danang, the 18th Vietnam Young Science and Technology Conference of Universities and Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy was attended by scientists in medical fields from all over the country, to share information on their research and experiences. Dr. Bui Thanh Binh, a DTU lecturer, won Second prize with his highly practical research to increase the effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment.

The biennial conference is organized by the Ministry of Health and the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union. It encourages young people in the health sciences in their studies, research and future careers. 32 Vietnamese universities attended and 174 research papers, in fields such as internal medicine, external medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, pharmacy, nursing, hematology and analysis, were presented.

To prepare for this year’s conference, the DTU Institute for Research and Training in Medicine, Biology and Pharmacology organized the Technology Conference for Young Health Scientists to select the three best papers for the national conference. These were “A Study of the value of plasma procalcitonin in diagnosing sepsis in children”, by Dr. Bui Thanh Binh of the Faculty of Medicine, “A Study of the preparation of lipid nanoparticle systems with diclofenac sodium”, by Ms.Nguyen Thi Thuy Trang of the Faculty of Pharmacy and “Navigating the metabolism in Escherichia coli bacteria for biosynthesis of several flavonoid rhamnosides”, by Faculty of Pharmacy student Le Thi Nhu Hoa.
All three DTU projects exhibited deep knowledge and practicability to effectively improve diagnosis and treatment. With his experience and fluent presentation skills, Dr. Bui Thanh Binh won Second prize and said “I should mention that I won through the support and encouragement of DTU, in addition to my own knowledge and passion. The research skills and guidance of the DTU professors and Doctorate students highlighted the way for me and I persevered. My accomplishment will motivate me and other young research scientists to attain even higher results at future conferences.”
Assistant Professor Nguyen Ngoc Minh, a DTU Vice-Provost, was a judge. He was honorably mentioned as one of the “Exemplary Medical Doctors in Vietnam” in 2009 and is a leading expert on the hematology of blood transfusions in Vietnam. He launched the first voluntary blood donation program in Central Vietnam and is only the second person in Vietnam to apply hematopoietic stem cell transplantation to treat diseases of the blood and hematopoietic organs.
