A Seminar About Vietnam’s Economic Role in Globalization

On March 22nd, DTU hosted a seminar entitled “Vietnam’s Economic Role in Globalization”, presided over by Associate Professor Tran Dinh Then, Director of the Vietnam Institute of Economics, with the DTU Board of Provosts, representatives of DTU faculties, the DTU Center for Social Economic Research, lecturers, postgraduates and students.

Associate Professor Tran Dinh Thien speaks

Associate Professor Thien talked about the swings in Vietnam’s economy in comparison with the world economy, over time. Globalization greatly affects the economies of all countries. In 1986, Vietnam initiated an economic reform plan to improve international relations by focusing on diversification and diplomacy. Vietnam now has diplomatic relations with 185 countries, is promoting trade in 224 foreign markets on five continents and has established strategic partnerships with several developed countries.

Associate Professor Thien also discussed Vietnam’s opportunities and challenges, and some solutions for improvement. He said: “International integration is an inevitable trend, bringing great benefits to countries that participate, spurring socio-economic growth and development, promoting business investment by making national markets more attractive and improving the skills of national workforces and the quality of local science and technology. Globalization can effectively combat economic problems, climate change and national security. By taking advantage of this big opportunity, Vietnam can exploit both internal and external resources to rapidly establish a foundation for sustainable national development”.

Constructive ideas for improvement were discussed, including the role of Vietnam as a member of international economic organizations and the active participation of Vietnam in free-trade agreements,  trade liberalization and open-door policies.
