P2A originated at Rangsit University in Thailand and, in 2012, DTU became one of the first five founding members when it joined Learning Express, an innovative international social program initiated by the Singapore Polytechnic. Since then, several exchange meetings have been held for students of universities and colleges in the ASEAN community. To broaden their knowledge of the various ASEAN cultures and economies, DTU has sent students to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and elsewhere, meanwhile welcoming a large number of students from the UK, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan and others to DTU. They traveled on special field trips to traditional craft villages in the region to live and work with local residents to research their traditional professions and broaden their practical experience.

The field trips have helped open up their minds and, as with that knowledge students have since contributed to DTU’s accomplishments in national and worldwide competitions. These have included recognition at the 2013 CDIO Cup, sponsored by the CDIO Academy for engineering projects, which was held in 2014 at Harvard University and MIT in the US, at the 2014 Asia-Pacific IDEERS Championship, at the IDEERS Convention, held at the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering in Taiwan, winning first prize at the 2015 Computer Fireworks Display and so on.

The 2014 Youth Model ASEAN Conference (YMAC), held at Singapore Polytechnic, provided DTU students with an interesting perspective into the roles of diplomats from the ten ASEAN countries during discussions about solutions to critical topics, including the environment, the economy, societies, cultures and security.

With a score of 26.5 points in the 2014 Entrance exam, Vo Thi Hoai Tram became a DTU valedictorian at her first choice of university and she was then selected to attend the 2014 YMAC.  She said: “Field-trips designed by P2A and Learning Express provide ASEAN students with the opportunity to exchange information and ideas about how to improve their community. In recent programs conducted by DTU, students have been able to access the latest study methods, learn more and increase their self-confidence in preparation for a strong future.”
