The quantity of publications in prestigious ISI-indexed journals is an indicator used for assessing the capability of scientific and technological research of each country.
Bibliometrics is the statistical analysis of written publications, such as books or articles and the Web of Science, by Thomson-Reuters, is the world’s leading source of academic research data. According to them, Vietnam released about 10,000 international papers from 2010 to 2014, as follows:
2010: 1,397 papers
2011: 1,570 papers
2012: 1,942 papers
2013: 2,427 papers
2014: 2,640 papers
The disciplines with the highest number of international publications are Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, which jointly accounts for one third of Vietnam’s international publications. Compared with other countries, Vietnam came 59th internationally, after Thailand, 43rd and Malaysia, 38th. Indonesia came 62nd and the Philippines 66th.
The Department of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Science and Technology has just released the list of Top 20 institutions with the most publications in ISI-indexed journals from 2010 to 2014. These include: the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the Vietnam National University in Hanoi, the Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City, the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the Hanoi National University of Education, the Hanoi Medical University, Can Though University, the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, Hue University, Vinh University, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City, the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases, the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Public Health University, Nong Lam University in Ho Chi Minh City, Ton Duc Thang University, the Bach Mai Hospital, Nha Trang University, the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology and Duy Tan University.
Worldwide, from 2010-2014, the US published 29% of international papers, followed by China, at 11%, the UK 7%, Germany 6.6%, Japan 5% and France 4.5%. In that period, Vietnam only produced 0.1%.
