October 15th was the deadline for all of Vietnam’s universities and colleges to submit their admission plans to the Ministry of Education and Training. Many of the submissions are quite unique.
In order to have Medicine and Pharmacology students with an understanding of life, our society, interpersonal relationships and the humanities, DTU added Literature to the admission requirements for Medicine, Pharmacology and Nursing. Mr. Vo Thanh Hai, DTU Acting Vice-Provost, explained to Tien Phong reporters.
DTU added Literature to its admission requirements
This year, DTU made its own admission plans based on two criteria, the results of the national high school examinations and the high school academic records. Accordingly, Mathematics and Philology are required and have been added to the optional subjects. The required subjects related to English major are those relating to Literature and the English language, with another to be chosen from Maths or History.
For Social Sciences and Humanities, DTU also requires Mathematics with remaining subjects combined. Passing grades as set by MOET and the second admission requirement is an average high school score of 6.0 over five terms, or three subjects with 18.0.
Mr. Thanh Hai emphasized that, while at other universities 60-70% of admission acceptances are based on high school transcripts, this now accounts for only 40% at DTU. He also stated that the innovative new admission plan will consider aggregate scores of various subjects will be considered, instead exam results.
Mr. Hai gave the following example. For the basic exam groups of last year, A1 and V1 are added. The admission criteria are based on Literature and English, and candidates can also choose between Mathematics and History. For Nursing and Pharmacology, out of the traditional subjects Maths, Chemistry and Biology or Maths, Physics and Chemistry, one subject must be chosen to be replaced by Literature. A student can therefore now study Maths, Literature and Biology or Maths, Literature and Chemistry.
Mr. Thanh Hai added that DTU has been considering this modification since last year, because Humanities are important in all disciplines, especially in Medicine, Pharmacology and Nursing.
He emphasized that he expects students will now have knowledge of Literature, in order to understand more about their lives, our society, interpersonal relationships, and to live a more humane lives. The field of Medicine in particular is strongly related to their interactions with the people they will work with.
