DTU has pioneered the application of 3D graphics training systems in Vietnam, in line with the ambitions of DTU leaders to achieve an innovative and integrated transition into the realm of advanced international education.
3D Graphics and Virtual Reality systems have been introduced widely into many fields in developed countries, including teaching and research. Currently more than three hundred universities worldwide are using this technology to develop applications, which include a Virtual Court for law school students at Harvard University, historical and cultural courses at Princeton University and music and art instruction at Ohio University.
At DTU, 3D applications are being used in several different areas, including:
- Virtual Reality for training applications.
- Culture and history teaching.
- Buiding models in Medicine and Pharmaceutics.
- Film-making and Art applications.
Firstly, by employing virtual reality, DTU has created an open-ended world for both teachers and students. Based on the SecondLife system and e-Learning platforms, DTU students can now access any DTU training center with a personal avatar to enroll, practice lessons and interact with instructors and colleagues. Secondly, miniature 3D representations of Van Mieu Quoc Tu Giam and the My Son Holy Land have been developed to allow students to learn more effectively about their histories and cultures. The system also helps to outline elements of the Vietnamese culture to visitors from abroad.
Some of the 3D applications that have been introduced at DTU
Recently DTU has begun to develop and introduce 3D Graphics systems in the teaching of surgery to students of Medicine and Pharmaceutics, including 3D skeletal, muscular and circulatory models. Various other models are also under development.
In addition, DTU has produced a 3D documentary about the air war in North Vietnam, between the Vietnamese Air Force and the American Air and Naval Forces, from 1965 to 1972. Mr. Didierjean Vincent Raphael, an experienced French film director who led the team of film makers, said: "There have been many American films made about the war. The film made by the DTU team is very special as it tells the stories the actual soldiers who devoted most of their lives achieving independence. Another reason I liked this project was that I was able to work with such diligent and dynamic young people at DTU."
Associate Professor Nguyen Ngoc Minh, said:
"Since its inception, because of the Information Technology revolution, DTU has planned that IT should be one of our major fields of study. So DTU has developed many Information Technology teaching applications. Two years ago, DTU introduced the Second Life virtual reality system in conjunction with its e-Learning programs for 2,500 students. This system has reaped major benefits and become a foundation for DTU to take more steps in the use of 3D Graphics for future education and research.”
These significant achievements have played an important role in the development of DTU as the first and largest private university in the Central Region of Vietnam. "
