DTU Excels in Vietnam National Mathematics Olympiad

Until now Nguyen Quang Hung of K18XPP2, of the DTU Construction Faculty, can reason why boring numbers, complex formulae and tricky problems had enchanted him so much since the day he first started studying Mathematics. His overwhelming passion strengthened his desire to take First prize in Analytics in the XXI National Mathematics Olympiad.

Quang Hung’s parents are farmers. He spent his childhood in the rice fields tending buffalo, listening to flute music and flying looking at colorful kites in the skies. One day, Quang Hung decided to make a beautiful kite by himself. He cut himself when he made his first kite and it couldn’t fly. Only after his father had explained how to balance its wings and how to adjust the curve and the hardness of its frame, did he appreciate the importance and necessity of Mathematical formulae to our lives. Then he constructed many beautiful kites that could fly high in the sky. He also spent much time designing unique models of houses, buildings and bridges. He didn’t realize that these childhood activities had inspired him to choose to study Construction at DTU.

It was not easy for Hung to go to university, even though he was a good pupil. Based on his good academic results, he was selected for the Quang Ninh Secondary School Team of Physics and Biology. He failed his university entrance exams twice but he didn’t give up. He studied hard. One day, he found out about DTU by accident while searching the internet and enrolled at DTU, which opened up a new page in his life. During his studies, he was given much good advice and help by more senior DTU students. This gradually dispelled his inferiority complex and helped him integrate into the new environment and prove himself.

Although he is only a first year student, Quang Hung is very self-confident. He said: “DTU is a multi-disciplined university with many dedicated professors and PhDs. This was most impressive. Its modern facilities with advanced equipment have greatly helped us in our studies and research. “Student-centered teaching methods” are applied at DTU, which are quite different from those at high school. These include active learning, cooperative learning and inductive teaching and learning, in which students solve problems, answer questions and debate and brainstorm during class. We have the opportunity to work in teams on problems and projects, formulate questions of our own, discuss them and explain them. With this new approach and the DTU faculty’s dedication to teaching, we have broadened our knowledge so much so that we can now participate internationally and achieve great things.”

Soon after enrollment, Quang Hung signed up for the entrance exam and was ranked in the top 5 DTU candidates before selection for the DTU Mathematics Olympiad team. Aware of the importance of a big contest, with its 800 contestants from 88 universities and colleges nationwide, the DTU Mathematics Olympiad team and faculty worked hard together. Quang Hung said: “Mr. Nguyen Duc Hien and Mr. Dinh Trung Hoa spent so much time and energy assisting the team all year. They not only taught us how to solve the contest questions but also nurtured our love of mathematics.

The 5-day contest ended successfully. At the closing and prize ceremony, Quang Hung was awarded first prize in Analytics, Pham Ngoc Nam won second prize in Algebra, while Pham Quang Trung and Tran Quynh Nga won third prizes.

His proud achievements motivated Quang Hung to nurture his ambition to reaching new heights. Mr. Nguyen Duc Hien commented: “In the early days studying for the contest, Quang Hung demonstrated his diligence and passion for Mathematics. He could remember the solutions to many of the problems he encountered very well. At first, he was a bit shy, but, day-after-day, Hung demonstrated his talents devising innovative solutions to some very difficult problems.

His early prize and deep passion for Mathematics has become his foundation and motive for future success. Talking about his future plans, Hung says that his passion for Mathematics has become benefitted him in his Construction studies at DTU. His big dream is to design and construct high buildings and unique bridges to beautify Vietnam, similar to impressive works like the Twin Towers in Malaysia, the Hoover Dam in America and so on. He said: “First of all, I will try my best to achieve high results so that I can get a steady job on graduation. Then I will enroll in a Masters program in Construction at DTU or study aboard if I get the opportunity. Then I would like to be a programmer, then a software project manager and, later perhaps, a CEO.”
