Thanou. Maya Prof. Institute of Pharmaceutical Science
Dr. Thanou is a Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Pharmaceutical Science, King’s College London. She finished her PhD in LACDR (Leiden/Amsterdam Centre for Drug Research) in 2000 in the area of the delivery of therapeutic peptides for cancer. In 2000 she received the AAPS award for excellence in Graduate Research. After a short period as project manager in Kytogenics Pharmaceuticals, she took her first academic appointment in the School of Pharmacy, Cardiff University as Lecturer in Polymer Therapeutics and Drug Delivery. In 2004 she was awarded the prestigious Dorothy Hodgkin Royal Society Research Fellowship and she continued research at Imperial College, at the Department of Chemistry and the Genetic Therapies Centre in the area of cancer gene therapy. She moved on in her current post as Senior Lecturer in 2009. In this post she is focusing in postgraduate teaching (Director of Msc Pharmaceutical Technology programme) and research in Chemical Biology. She is currently focusing on the chemical design and development of theranostic nanoparticles, de novo design of nanoparticles for MW imaging, as well as novel nanomaterials for NIRF optical imaging (funded by EPSRC, BBSRC and King's Commercialisation Institute, Schlumberger Foundation). Her research can be summarised on engineering image guided drug delivery methods, using nanoparticles and nanomaterials as novel drug delivery devices. She collaborates with a umber of companies and she has been awarded two BBSRC industrial case studentships. She has published a number of research papers and she is the main or co inventor of 7 patents.
