On October 14 and 15, 2017, 150 officials representing 824 Union members attended the Eighth DTU Union Congress for the 2017-2022 term. The meeting consisted of a series of political events for university staff and lecturers, an assessment of how the leadership had implemented the resolutions of the Seventh DTU Union Congress and plans for the 2017-2022 term.
This year, city workers, officials and laborers got together to welcome the Sixteenth Danang Union Congress for the 2018–2023 term. Among the invitees were Mr. Vu Minh Duc, Vietnam General Confederation of Labor Presidium member and Chairman of the Vietnam National Education Union and Mr. Hoang Huu Nghi, Danang Labor Union Vice-Chairman and representative of the Labor Union Functional Committee. DTU was represented by Hero of Labor and Meritorious Teacher Le Cong Co, university Chairman and Provost, university Vice-Provosts and other leaders.

The DTU Union is one of eleven union branches operating in private universities and depending directly on the city Labor Unions. 74% of the DTU lecturers have finished postgraduate studies and 19.5% hold PhDs. The university has solid infrastructure and a high level of cooperation amongst employees. It benefits from the attention of the Party at many levels and has a good working relationship with the Boards of Trustees and Provosts, which all facilitates the mobility of employees and an even stronger university Union.
The support of the Boards of Trustees and Provosts, together with the enthusiastic response from staff and lecturers, has allowed DTU’s enrollment to meet the Ministry of Education and Training targets every single year, despite the fact that, during the previous term, the national economy still suffered and other institutions failed to meet their targets. To continue to achieve this, DTU international programs are being expanded to add more well-established universities in the US, the UK, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and elsewhere. Partnerships with a variety of five hundred well-known companies locally also enable 90% of graduates to find immediate employment.
The strength of the university Union is its encouragement of and creation of condition for the organization of emulation in all activities of science, innovation, and technical improvement of teaching and studying. During the last term, 34 scientific research projects received government funding, 25 Nafosted funding, and 2 funding from abroad; 1,787 research papers were published in journals with ISSN numbers and 596 in ISI or Scopus indexed journals (as of August 31, 2017); and so on. An important result showing DTU’s educational and research prestige was the national accreditation awarded on February 20, 2017. Vice Provost Dr Le Nguyen Bao was in particular honored to be recognized as one of the twenty scientists with most positive contributions to the scientific and technological development of Danang in the twenty years (since 1997) it has been a direct-controlled municipality.

The university Union has successfully created, negotiated, and signed collective bargaining agreements with conditions favorable to workers, policies attracting high-quality workers which the Board of Trustees has implemented, and guarantees of workers’ living standards which continue improving, with the average income per person at the end of 2016 being about 7,000 USD per annum. During the previous term, through counsel of the university Union, the Boards of Trustees and of Provosts have organized support for employees in difficult circumstances with housing, medical care, and new year’s gifts with a total value of over a billion VND.
DTU has been honored by Party, state, government, ministries, agencies, the city of Danang, and recognition organizations with many outstanding emulation flags and Certificates of Merit. The school has been particularly honored by the Prime Minister with a second-class Labor Medal and with the honorary title Hero of Labor in the period or renovation for comrade Le Cong Co, Party Committee Secretary and university Chairman and Provost, who was furthermore selected as one of the twenty “Exemplary Danang Citizens”, chosen to mark twenty years (since January 1, 1997) of being a direct-controlled municipality.
The 2017–2022 Executive Committee will be the core of Union activities and movements aimed at contributing even more to the general development of the university
“The Union has always been very capable working with the university to create an ever stronger DTU and affirming its internationally recognized position in education, research, technology transfer and business collaboration,” stated Dr. Vo Thanh Hai, Party Committee Deputy-Secretary and DTU Vice-Provost. “During the next term, the Union should be even more resolved to assist the university in realizing its dream of propelling DTU into the list of the top 400 Asian universities.”
Chairman of the Vietnam National Education Union Mr Vu Minh Duc awarded Union Certificates of Merit to four collectives (University Union, University Office Union, Faculty of Accounting Union, Faculty of Civil Engineering Union) and six individuals (Acting Vice Provost Dr Vo Thanh Hai, Vice Provost Dr Le Nguyen Bao, Faculty of Civil Engineering Dean Dr Nguyen The Duong, Faculty of Business Administration lecturer Ms Nguyen Thi Tuyen Ngon, Faculty of Accounting lecturer Ms Mai Thi Quynh Nhu, Center of Physical Education and National Defense Director Mr Le Duc Trong). In name of the Danang Labor Union, its Vice Chairman Mr Hoang Huu Nghi awarded Certificates of Merit to the DTU university Union and to University Union Vice Chairman Mr Hoang Minh Duc. A further 13 collectives and 28 individual Union members received Certificates of Merit from the University Union Executive Committee.
Speaking at the Congress, Danang Labor Union Vice Chairman Mr Hoang Huu Nghi congratulated the university Union for its achievements of the previous term. He also proposed that the members of the University Union Executive Committee of the new term, with their politically responsible role, focus on unceasingly increasing solidarity and make efforts for a creative and innovated emulation in all activities to set down achievements like the Congress set out and to contribute even more to the general development of the university, and especially to realize the aspiration to enter the top 300 of Asian universities. Mr Hoang Huu Nghi also expressed the hope that the future DTU university Union activities and movements with be even more successful and deserving of the trust of the Party Committee, the Boards of Trustees and of Provosts, and of the school’s staff, lecturers, employees, and Union members.
