DTU students win third prize

The prizes cultivated and motivated talented young students in the research community, and contributed to the creation of teams of future scientists, with 565 students participating, individually or in groups, from 81 universities, submitting 178 outstanding projects, selected from 14 fields.

In the Engineering & Technology section, a team of DTU students, comprising Thi Ly Liem, Phan Van Truyen, Truong Minh Xuan Tung, and Pham Thi Khanh Van, was awarded third prize for their project ‘“Smart wearable devices to support people with disabilities or limited mobility’. They created a wearable electronic device and a series of controllers installed around the house. The system works on all electrical devices, recognizes gestures, such as swiping, touching, and tilting. Simple requests, like turning a device on or off, are transmitted to a CCD control circuit, using the LoRa communication system.

Pham Thi Khanh Van said: “One of our teams’ grandmothers had a stroke, can’t move around anymore, and many older people with bone and joint diseases are experiencing similar problems. Sometimes, when it’s cold in the middle of the night she must get up to turn off a fan, or switch on the light to go for a drink. Our team worked together to create a low-cost, convenient device that allows disabled people to operate household appliances remotely. We were fortunate enough to have received technical guidance from MSc Truong Van Truong, Dean of the DTU Faculty of Electrical Engineering, to complete our project.”

Another team of DTU students, comprising Tran Gia Bao, Le Thi Thuy Duong and Hoang Gia Khanh, won a consolation prize in the Medicine & Pharmacy section, with their project: ‘Creating wound suturing models in surgical practice’. They researched and manufactured a skin model that is cheap, durable, and lifelike, for the teaching and practicing of wound suturing skills, and improve surgical practice in medicine & pharmacy generally.

DTU students also won a most-voted poster award for the project: ‘Collecting debris from rubber tires electrostatically (with environmental protection)’, by a team comprising Pham Van Mai, Hoang Phi Hung, Phan Van Viet Linh, Nguyen Trong Hieu, and Truong Minh Xuan Tung. This remarkable project uses advanced technology to recycle and reuse the tire debris, which will benefit the environment and demonstrate DTU students’ acumen and awareness of resource protection.

These awards encourage DTU students to continue developing their capabilities, and come up with as many useful ideas and solutions as possible to help solve even more society problems.
