“Tropiceering Vietnam” Exhibition at DTU

On January 3rd, a unique exhibition entitled: “Tropiceering Vietnam” was held at DTU, to present new architectural design solutions for development in tropical countries. Several course projects were presented by DTU Architecture students, who were also able to learn about the Tropiceering of experts.

Tropiceering is not only about architecture, but also about creating a dynamic and evolving environment that responds to a tropical region’s specific climatic, cultural and environmental factors, employing appropriate design and engineering solutions, and forging intimate connections between human beings and nature.

The exhibition offered a diverse display area, with models, drawings, and unique architectural projects related to Tropiceering, such as floating houses and villages, based on the actual terrain, climate and environment of Danang. Students were able to present their creative ideas and demonstrate their design capability through their unique products, together with their vision of directly applying the knowledge they already have.

DTU lecturers and students at the exhibition

Dr. Tran Gia Viet My, a lecturer at the University of Hawaii, and currently Visiting Professor in charge of Basic Project 2 for DTU Architecture students said “Teaching and mentoring the projects for this event, I discovered that DTU students are handworkers and critical thinkers. They grasp problems quickly and know how to apply their current knowledge and skills effectively. However, they now need to expand that knowledge and get updated on international design trends, in order to understand the latest and most popular worldwide and always keep up with the times.”

‘Tropiceering Vietnam’ was also a forum for exchange and discussion, and an inspiration for those with a passion for architecture and the tropics, an opportunity to interact and share ideas, and create an environment conducive to the development of Tropiceering. The exhibition increased the awareness of the value of tropical architecture, and encouraged collaboration and creativity between architects of different generations. They were re-inspired for residential design projects in the tropics, thanks to the motivation of the experts. The DTU architects of the future will continue to explore and develop tropical architecture solutions and create unique and sustainable design concepts for our country.
