The Master’s Program in Calculation Techniques in Mechanics at Bochum University

On 27th March, 2013, Professor Le Khanh Chau from Bochum University in the Federal Republic of Germany visited DTU to talk about their Master’s program in Calculation Techniques in Mechanics. Dr. Vo Thanh Hai, DTU Vice Provost, members of the DTU Research and Development Center, faculty and students of the DTU Departments of Civil Engineering, Natural Sciences and the DTU International School attended the event.

Professor Le Khanh Chau presents the Bochum University Master’s program

In recent years, rapid developments in the field of Civil Engineering have contributed to the changing characteristics of many big cities. In Vietnam, if we merely continue to apply old fashioned methods in methods, materials and design, we cannot produce buildings to meet modern requirements. After many years of experience in teaching and research, Professor Le Khanh Chau has identified the difficulties faced in the construction of safe and attractive architectural projects. “We are confronted with big challenges in techniques. The invention of smaller components, larger centralized machinery, new lighter materials with high endurance and so on are essential for us. In order to do that, we have to invent new modeling and calculation methods to support technical requirements. Many universities and institutes, including Bochum University, are conducting research on this issue”, he said.

Professor Le Khanh Chau presented details of Bochum University and its Master’s program in Calculation Techniques in Mechanics. Bochum is one of the biggest universities in the Federal Republic of Germany, offering academic courses and scientific research, ranging from social science to natural science and technological science. In 2000, Bochum University conducted a project in Vietnam to manage water supply and waste and do environmental research. He also talked about Viet Duc University, which was established on German academic, with a variety of programs selected from leading German technical institutions.

Dr. Vo Thanh Hai, DTU Vice-Provost said: “Currently, DTU is offering postgraduate programs in Computer Science, Business Administration, and Accounting, in collaboration with well-known international universities. MOET has given its approval for DTU to offer a new Master’s program in Civil and Industrial Engineering. The Bochum Master’s program in Calculation Techniques in Mechanics will open up more learning opportunities for DTU faculty and students, in order to exchange their experience with each other”.

After introducing his program, Professor Chau met with the faculty of the DTU Department of Civil Engineering. "I am happy to see the enthusiasm and ambition of the DTU faculty and students. We both do research in civil engineering and we can share our knowledge. By holding seminars, working with leading professors and collaborating in education and research, we can improve the teaching quality and open up new research opportunities for DTU technologists", he added.
